Liberal Democrats set out challenge to Labour in Islington
Islington's Liberal Democrats have launched their General Election campaign with a call to back the party's plans for a fairer deal for Islington, with a focus on housing, crime, the NHS and action on the cost of living crisis, plus a commitment to pursue Britain's future in Europe.
Terry Stacy, candidate for Islington South & Finsbury, says "Labour have taken Islington voters for granted for far too long. We need a positive alternative to Labour in the Town Hall, in City Hall, and in Parliament: Islington deserves better.
"The LibDems' Fair Deal means building the affordable homes we all know Islington needs, sorting out council repairs and getting a fairer deal for leaseholders and private tenants too. And it means action, not just words, on the cost of living crisis.
"Conservatives are soon to be out of Government and are already out of the race here in Islington, with no candidates yet.
"I've served Islington for years as a councillor, magistrate and charity campaigner. As your MP, I’ll never trade your interests for a Government job, and I’ll never forget that I work for you."
Vikas Aggarwal, candidate for Islington North, says "In this election year, there’s nothing more important than ensuring that Islington has a strong progressive voice in the next Parliament. That’s why I’m standing for the Liberal Democrats here in Islington North.
"The Liberal Democrats' Fair Deal means defending the NHS from further cuts. Unlike some Labour MPs, I won’t support closing any of the Whittington’s vital services. It means fighting police cuts and speaking up for victims of crime.
"Islington voters were among the strongest supporters of Remaining in the EU anywhere in the UK. We’ve all been badly let down not only by Tory Brexit but also by Labour’s indecision. It’s only the Liberal Democrats who will fight for our European future.
"Labour have taken Islington voters for granted for far too long and have shocked their own supporters with infighting over Jeremy Corbyn and taking democratic choice away from the local members.
"It's time for a change. It's the Liberal Democrats who are offering a positive alternative in Islington."
At the last General Election, the Liberal Democrats came second to Labour in both Islington South & Finsbury and Islington North.
