Liberal Democrats Launch Campaign to Save Islington Upper Street Post Office

The Upper Street Post Office, a cornerstone of our community, is at risk of closure due to plans by Post Office Ltd. to offload 115 directly-owned "Crown" branches, including this vital location.

For thousands of residents, this post office isn’t just another branch—it’s an essential resource, especially since the closure of other nearby post offices in recent years. Elderly residents rely on its convenience for pensions, banking and daily needs, while small business owners depend on it too. Families, commuters, and local shopkeepers alike would feel the impact deeply. If this branch closes, it will leave a gap that no replacement could adequately fill.

Local Liberal Democrat campaigner Kate Pothalingam, who has been in close touch with concerned residents, highlighted the importance of keeping the branch open: “This post office is essential for so many people here. Neighbours constantly tell me how much they rely on it, whether for managing their businesses or collecting pensions. That’s why I, alongside Terry and Islington Liberal Democrats, am calling on the Post Office to rethink this decision. We need a clear commitment to keeping this branch open for Islington.”

Fellow Liberal Democrat campaigner, Terry Stacy, voiced similar disappointment: “It’s troubling, especially after promises of no austerity under a Labour government, to see the government-owned Post Office making cuts that could leave our community without vital services. Islington deserves reliable, accessible postal services. I urge everyone to join us in calling on the Post Office to keep Upper Street Post Office open and serving our community.”
Stand with us—sign our petition today to help keep this post office open for Islington.
