Labour Council Housing Shame
The Independent Housing Ombudsman has published a damning report on Labour-run Islington Council, requiring over £66k in compensation for victims, and making 186 recommendations and compulsory instructions for change.
Among the cases was a disabled resident unable to use their ground floor wet room for months due to a lack of repairs while another resident’s complaint was stuck in the landlord’s system for three years. One household waited 14 months for a new radiator.
Another complaint saw a resident with mental health problems stuck without a working key fob for her building for ten months – something that should have been resolved within 24 hours.
Shockingly, 94% of anti-social behaviour cases were found to have taken too long to resolve.
Terry Stacy, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary spokesperson for Islington South, says “People have been raising the issues with the council on the doorstep for years. This report has only told tenants what they already knew, that Labour-run Islington is catastrophically failing residents.”
Terry, a social housing tenant himself, added ”We've had a Labour council for 14 years, Labour MPs for decades, and it's still the same failures and excuses. Islington deserves better.”
