Islington Falls Victim to Police Cuts

Recent cuts to London’s Metropolitan Police have led to a worrying trend in policing numbers. Figures uncovered by the London Liberal Democrats show a significant cut in the number of officers meant to keep our streets safe. The data shows that from April to October 2023 there were 308 fewer officers working, with a 6% cut in police numbers across Islington.

Across the city, one in 5 of neighbourhood police teams have had their officer numbers reduced, making it harder for them to keep our community safe.

Lib Dem Mayoral Candidate Rob Blackie said, “These numbers highlight the failure of our Labour Mayor to properly fund an organisation that is already struggling under the pressure. With one in five neighbourhood teams losing officers, it is clear that Labour is going back on their pledge to prioritise local policing - putting local people at risk. The Liberal Democrats are committed to supporting local people and giving our local police teams the resources they need to keep us safe.”

Vikas Aggarwal, Islington North’s Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesperson, adds: “The Conservative Government and Labour Mayor continue to blame each other for these police cuts, while local people lose out. Islington deserves better.”
